Calling All Bakers!

January 7th, 2011 by Chris

Starting this weekend, I’ll be hosting here at  A Ku Indeed what is known in the virtual ether as a BBA Challenge. The name comes from Peter Reinhart’s book The Bread Baker’s Apprentice: Mastering the Art of Extraordinary Bread. It’s a great book, starting with many chapters dedicated to novice topics ranging from understanding ingredients to the different kinds of shaping and then moves on to the main bulk dedicated to 43 different bread recipes, each explained in detail and with excellent accompanying food photography. The BBA “challenge” is to walk through the book from the start and moving foward, baking one recipe a week, until done.  Typically a BBA Challenge is anchored at one blog and all participants bake the same recipes at the same time and then compare notes (and thus learn more about baking in the process) by posting photos and comments on the blog thread dedicated to each recipe. At this point, seven people have “signed on” to the challenge this blog will be hosting starting this weekend. If you are interested but can’t do it this weekend, that’s not a problem – participating now and again is perfectly fine. So if you like to bake bread and are up for it, we’d be happy to have you join up.  For more information on how it all works, read this post I wrote.

    Hi Chris,

Good luck with the challenge. It’s a fun ride. Thanks for listing my blog on yours!

I’ve started the challenge! Since I’m going to be at your house all weekend, I baked the Anadamma last night. And just used some for lunch, actually.

I held off figuring we’d make it together when you arrived. Ah well, I’ll start the sponge tonight and make it for tomorrow.

    Hi Chris,
Hey, thanks for hosting a BBA Challenge–I’m honored that you chose my book and would love to hear how it goes. I’ll try to check back from time to time for updates (no promises, though, as I’m slammed right now working on a new website as well as a new book on gluten-free baking–the next big frontier). Best of success.

    Peter –

Thanks so much for taking the time out to comment here and offer your encouragement for our upcoming BBA Challenge! I’ve really been enjoying reading your book (as I’m sure are all of the other participants) and I know we’re all ready to take this challenge, learn a lot about baking in the process, and – of course – eat some great bread along the way.

If you find the time to check back in, I’m sure we’d all love to hear any suggestions, comments, or words of encouragement you’d be willing to make. Having co-authored a few books myself, I know how busy the schedule can be, so if you don’t find the time it’s perfectly understandable.

Happy Baking, and good luck on the new book!
