Those Inevitable Moments
This part of the second inner chapter of Zhuangzi (the character of Yao) always makes me think of certain times when I feel like I’m unsuccessful in the classroom at transmitting to students why it’s important to learn. When this happens, I get predictably pissed off and focus on the few students who don’t get it, missing a larger picture and highlighting a narrow one.
Once Yao said to Shun: “I want to attack Zong, Guai and Xuao. I sit on my throne and it bothers me. Why is this?” Shun said: “These three small states still dwell among the underbrush. Why are you bothered? Once ten suns came out together and the ten thousand things were all illuminated. Shouldn’t virtue be better than ten thousand suns?”
